Visitors departing from Seoul have several transportation options to reach Gwangju. One option is to depart from either Yongsan or Seoul Station, with Yongsan offering more train choices. Travelers can opt for the slower train (Mugunghwa/ITX), which takes about 4 hours one way to Gwangju Station, or take the faster bullet train (KTX/SRT), which takes just under 2 hours to reach Gwangju-Songjeong Station. While Gwangju Station is closer to the city center, it is only accessible via slow trains. We recommend using Gwangju-Songjeong Station for a more efficient journey.
Another convenient choice is to take a bus from Seoul Central City Bus Terminal or Dong Seoul Bus Terminal to Gwangju U-Square. This option is the most economical and takes approximately 3 hours and 20 minutes to reach Gwangju.
For an optimal day trip to Gwangju, travelers have several convenient options for departing from Seoul. We highly recommend taking the 9:15 AM KTX train from Yongsan Station, which arrives at Gwangju-Songjeong Station just after 11:00 AM. While there are earlier train options departing from Seoul, such as the 5:10 AM train arriving at 7:10 AM, the 9:15 AM departure provides a well-balanced schedule for exploration.

Upon your arrival at Gwangju-Songjeong Station at 11:00 AM, directly across the street, you'll discover the charming 1913 Songjeong Station Market. This historic market has been transformed into a lively, kitschy street lined with a wide array of unique food options, bustling food stalls, and intriguing craft stores. It's the perfect place to kick off your day in Gwangju. Make your way to the market for a delightful brunch experience. If you've been exploring Chungjang-ro or the Asia Culture Center and decide to call it a night, a quick taxi ride of about 15-20 minutes will take you to Gwangju-Songjeong Station. From there, you can catch the last train departing at 10:30 PM to return to Seoul.
However, if you're in the mood for more adventure and wish to experience Gwangju's nightlife, you can choose to party all night and catch the first train back to Seoul at 5:00 AM. For the night owls who prefer to live on the edge, Gwangju offers overnight buses departing from Gwangju U-Square Bus Terminal. These buses run every hour from 9:00 PM until the last bus at 1:00 AM the following day, providing a convenient and unconventional way to extend your stay or make a dramatic exit from this dynamic city.
